The Best Water Bowls for Dog Crates

We all know that fresh drinking water should be available for our puppies and adult dogs at all times but how can we do that when they’re in their crate without it spilling or tipping over? Let’s take a look at some of the clever water bowl designs available that’ll keep your dog and their crates nice and dry.

Best No-Spill Water Bowl for Dog Crates

Our Top Dog Crate Water Bowl Choice!

This is the original (and best) no spill bowl, the Road Refresher.

Developed and launched 16 years ago, Natalie Ellis, Inventor of the Road Refresher bowl won three awards at the British Female Inventor of the Year Awards (BFIIN) in Cardiff, Wales, March 2008. The Road Refresher won Best New Product Development, Natalie also won first runner up for Overall Innovator and Inventor of the Year, and a Special Recognition Award for her achievements.

With a simple, yet clever design, the road refresher has a floating plastic top to minimise splashing and a rolled cap design which directs slopping water back into the centre of the bowl. It’s simply genius.

The sloping sides and wide base makes it nearly impossible to knock over, or for a dog to pick up. So when it’s used in a crate it can’t be tipped, thrown or knocked over. So the only spills you’ll be mopping up are your puppies other little accidents…

The great design means not only can you use it at home in your dog’s crate, but also on the move too. The road refresher was originally designed to be used in vehicles and because it’s so stable and sloshes the water back into the bowl, you can keep it filled whilst moving giving your dog constant access to water at all times.

Although we adore a road refresher bowl, it’s wise to keep in mind they do have some drawbacks but we think they’re worth it.

Cleaning Challenges: While the spill-proof design helps minimize mess, cleaning the bowl thoroughly, including its inner components, can be a bit more challenging compared to traditional bowls. It may require disassembly for a thorough clean. But that’s easy enough, unclip the rim and remove completely then lift out the floating splash guard and clean as normal.

Not Ideal for All Dogs: Some dogs may find the design of the Road Refresher bowl confusing or challenging to use, especially if they are used to traditional bowls. It may take some time for a dog to adapt to drinking from this type of bowl. This can also be overcome by initially removing the floating splash guard, or pushing in down exposing more water in the top of the bowl.

Best Clip On Water Bowl for Dog Crates

If you want to save floor space, or perhaps your new puppy has a habit of dropping things in their bowls, then you may want to consider a water bowl that clips onto the side bars of your dog’s crate both lifting it off the floor and enabling easier access to it without bending (Perfect for older or recuperating dogs).

We like the Midwest Homes Snap’y fit bowl. Simple to attach without using any tools and stainless steel so really easy to keep hygienic and fresh for your dog.

Stainless steel is a great choice for your dog’s bowls for several reasons;

  1. Durability: Stainless steel bowls are highly durable and resistant to scratches, dents, and chipping. This durability ensures a longer lifespan compared to other materials, making them a cost-effective choice for pet owners.
  2. Hygiene: Stainless steel is a non-porous material, which means it does not harbor bacteria, mold, or other pathogens that can lead to infections or illnesses. This makes it easier to clean and maintain proper hygiene for your dog’s food and water bowls.
  3. Easy to Clean: Cleaning stainless steel bowls is a simple process, as they are often dishwasher safe. The smooth surface of stainless steel prevents food particles from sticking, and it can be thoroughly cleaned to remove any residue, ensuring a safe and healthy eating environment for your dog.
  4. Chemical-Free: Unlike some plastic bowls that may contain harmful chemicals like BPA, stainless steel is a safe and inert material. This is especially important for dogs with sensitivities or allergies, as stainless steel bowls do not leach harmful substances into your pet’s food or water.
  5. Non-reactive: Stainless steel is non-reactive to various food types, ensuring that your dog’s food or water remains uncontaminated. Some materials, like certain plastics, can react with acidic or fatty foods, potentially altering the taste or composition of the food. Stainless steel eliminates this concern, providing a stable and safe container for your dog’s meals.

Best Water Bottle for Dog Crates

Although I’m not a massive fan of the caged pets type of water bottle for dogs (I just don’t think they get enough water from it, dogs are slurpers and drippers!) I did find one that has a small bowl attachment.

This means you can provide plenty of water (in the bottle) whilst still only having a small bowl available, in case your dog splashes or drops things in it. Best of both worlds!

Bear in mind that this is a small container (around a pint) so will only really be suitable for small dogs in small crates, they do however have their benefits;

  1. Spill Prevention: Rabbit hutch water bottles are designed to minimize spills and keep the water contained within the bottle. This can be advantageous in a dog crate, especially during travel, as it helps prevent the crate from becoming wet and messy.
  2. Space Saving: Water bottles can be mounted on the side of the crate, saving floor space compared to a traditional water bowl. This can be beneficial in smaller crates where floor space is limited.
  3. Longer Availability of Water: Depending on the size of the water bottle, it may provide a continuous supply of water for a longer duration compared to a traditional bowl. This can be useful during travel or when the dog is left alone for extended periods.
  4. Hygiene: The design of water bottles can help maintain the cleanliness of the water, as it is less exposed to debris, dirt, or contaminants from the crate environment. This can contribute to better water quality for the dog.
  5. Reduction of Playfulness-related Spills: Some dogs, especially puppies or those with a playful nature, may tend to knock over traditional water bowls in their crate. A rabbit hutch water bottle can help minimize such spills, ensuring that the dog has access to water when needed.

Best Collapsible Water Bowl for Travel Dog Crates

In my search for the ultimate crate water bowl I stumbled across this collapsible design which I think is really clever.

When used on a travel crate it can be folded and flipped up keeping it out of the way and also means you can collapse a standard wire mesh crate whilst leaving it attached. Great if you’re taking a crate to grandmas house (other relatives are available…)

FYI I’ve been a fan of dexas stuff since I bought one of their dexas silicone treat pouches, check them out too!
